Safety Signs

By: Tom Frank

Safety signs are needed to specify a situation, activity or object that has to be avoided. They are used to provide information about how to follow safety at the work or other places. Different colors, illumination and sound are made use of in safety signs. Their placement differs depending on what their message is. Safety signs are used to warn of hazards. There are danger signs, warning signs, caution signs to name a few. Danger signs make use of red, black and white colors. Red indicates danger. A combination of white and black is used to catch attention even at a distance. Warning signs use black and orange combination. Caution signs are yellow and black. Most of the safety signs use visual signs instead of text. These visual signs are universal so anybody can understand them. If you are not aware of them, make sure you do. Safety signs when combined with safe practices go a long way in keeping you and others safe.

We will have a look at the different types of safety signs and how they are useful in safeguarding human life.

Road signs are very common and can be seen at all places. Traffic signs are also a part of road signs. They are strategically placed at important locations on the road especially where there is work going on or some possibility of danger. Among road signs, the no parking sign is the most popular one. It indicates that parking is not allowed in that area and if anybody parks their vehicle in that area, they can be fined or have their vehicle towed away. Under traffic signs, there are some mandatory signs like horn prohibited which the driver has to follow mandatorily. Then there are cautionary signs like slippery road which cautions the driver about the perils on the road. And then there are the informatory signs like hospital ahead which gives more information to the road user about the different facilities on the road. Other safety signs are school ahead, speed breakers, railway crossing etc. All these signs are for the safety of the driver and the general public.

Then there are the fire signs or fire extinguisher signs. These signs are useful to point out the location and the type of the fire extinguisher that is available. The type of fire extinguisher tells the user which type of fire it is used against. Fire signs are used to indicate combustible material like petrol too. A no smoking sign is a type of fire sign. Directional fire signs point out the different fire exits that the user can use in case of a fire. It is usually indicated with the help of a white man on a green background heading towards a fire exit. Fire signs should ideally be luminous so that people can find them out in the dark.

Other important signs are construction signs. These are found on roads and construction sites. The one that is used frequently is the ‘Men at Work’ sign. This helps to warn people, especially drivers, that construction work is being carried out so they can change their route. If there is excavation work being carried out, then the same sign is placed along with road barriers and a ‘Diversion Ahead’ sign is also used.

Remember know safety, no injury; no safety, know injury. Hence, always make use of safety signs and protect yourself and others around you.
