Battery Maintenance: Tips for Maintaining Your Lead Acid Battery

Battery maintenance is essential for prolonging the life of your batteries. One factor that contributes to life span reduction of your lead acid batteries is heat. It is highly recommended that you store batteries in a cool place during the hot seasons. At 77 0 F or 250 C the batteries tend to stay healthier longer. Good battery maintenance techniques involve the use of a well ventilated box to cover your lead batteries.

The water levels of non sealed lead acid batteries need to be checked constantly. Any low level is to be topped off with distilled water.

A technique that keeps the battery from either overcharging or undercharging will aid in battery maintenance. A device that achieves this purpose is a charge controller, otherwise known as a charge regulator. Apart from preventing the over-charging or the under-charging of batteries, a regulator also helps in keeping batteries at safe levels. Deep cycle batteries must essentially, not discharge below 20%, if they do it will shorten their life span.

Batteries are to be stored only after they have been fully charged. This is very important if you have a need to keep your battery unused. One cause of batteries not holding charge is when lead acid batteries are stored uncharged. It is however recommended that batteries should not be stored unused for a long time without being recharged.
